Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a transformative surgical procedure designed to create a firmer, flatter abdomen by removing excess skin and fat while tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles. This comprehensive approach addresses issues that diet and exercise alone cannot fix, such as loose skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Unlike liposuction which only removes fat, a tummy tuck addresses all three components of abdominal contour concerns: excess skin, stubborn fat deposits, and weakened muscles (diastasis recti). The procedure can dramatically improve your body profile, eliminate the "pooch" or overhanging skin, and restore confidence in your appearance.

At Neoderma Clinica, our experienced plastic surgeons customize each tummy tuck to meet your specific needs, whether you require a full abdominoplasty, mini tummy tuck, or extended procedure. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and requires dedicated recovery time to ensure optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tummy tuck addresses three concerns: excess skin, fat deposits, and weakened abdominal muscles. It involves removing excess skin and fat while surgically tightening the abdominal muscles. Liposuction only removes fat deposits without addressing loose skin or muscle laxity. For patients with good skin elasticity and no muscle separation who only need fat removal, liposuction may be sufficient. Those with loose skin or muscle separation will benefit more from a tummy tuck.

Tummy tuck results can be long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. The removed excess skin and fat cells won't return, and the tightened muscles will remain repaired. However, significant weight fluctuations, future pregnancies, or natural aging can affect your results over time. To maintain optimal results, we recommend maintaining a stable weight through proper diet and regular exercise, avoiding future pregnancies if possible, and following a healthy lifestyle.

Tummy tuck recovery is more extensive than many other cosmetic procedures. Most patients need 2 weeks off work and should avoid strenuous activities for 6 weeks. Initially, you'll need to walk slightly bent at the waist to avoid tension on the incision. You'll wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks to reduce swelling and support healing tissues. Drains may be placed for 1-2 weeks to prevent fluid buildup. While most swelling subsides within 6-8 weeks, complete healing with final results takes 6-12 months.

Yes, you can safely have children after a tummy tuck, as the procedure doesn't affect your ability to become pregnant or carry a baby to term. However, pregnancy after a tummy tuck will likely stretch the skin and separate the repaired muscles again, potentially reversing many of the aesthetic benefits of your surgery. For this reason, we typically recommend waiting until you've completed your family before undergoing a tummy tuck. If you do become pregnant after a tummy tuck, you may consider a revision procedure after recovery from childbirth.
